Perky's Bat Tower

Perky's Bat Tower or bat house was built back in 1929 by Richter C. Perky, who hoped to control the Keys mosquito population with the bats living in his bat condo. Unfortunately that didn't work when the bats he purchased flew away as soon as he released them and though still not occupied it still remains standing today and in 1982 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you want to see this strange attraction, take Overseas highway to MM17 and look for a rusty airplane on the side of the road near the sign reading Sugarloaf Airport. Take a right turn onto the unmarked road (really called Bat Tower Road) and veer to the right at the fork in the road.
